Address: Rue Aldringen, 1118 Luxembourg
What is Let’z swap about?
Let’z swap is a clothing swap event. an eco-conscious practice of consumption that allows participants exchange their valued but no longer used clothing for clothing they will use. Clothing swaps are considered not only a good way to refill one’s wardrobe, but also are considered an act of environmentalism.
What is difference between clothes swapping and buying second hand?
Itβs a mutual exchange instead of just someone else giving away something and then somebody else take that.
So, the sense of mutual exchange gives an extra value to clothes swapping compared to when buying a second hand vintage.
Because here we give something we once used to like wearing them instead of something someone else once used to like wearing before.
So, you will remember that new item in your life was in exchange of an old thing you once used to have before.
I am sure those who can imagine or already experienced, will understand this feel better. I give you something and you give me something else, but I may donβt know you even.
It gets even more beautiful when you realize what I might donβt like that much anymore, someone else can like and wear today instead of leaving in the wardrobe for another year. Moreover, I will have something new to wear in exchange too.
Clothes swapping doesnβt have a class of society. Whether you have a low income or youβre a wealthy person, clothes swapping can be yours too.
Itβs a practice to fight overconsumptions and consumerism.
Itβs fun, itβs nice and good for the planet most importantly.
The negative consequences of fashion industry can’t be neglected if we want a green future by achieving sustainability and circularity.
Clothes swapping and buying second hand arenβt actually the main solution to the problem.
We need to create ethical products and use as much as our needs. Making lifetime of products shorter shouldnβt be a marketing strategy to sell more.
Itβs also important to reuse, repair and recycle.
Reuse and recycle can be done by up-cycling them which means creating a new product from recycled material. For example, making a jacket from parts of different clothes.
Buying second hand and swapping are also a way to reuse.
Then finally if something canβt be used anymore, they should be recycled.
Itβs also important to create from sustainable materials. The environmental impacts such as the emissions are important metrics if we are responsible in production of them or when it comes to purchasing them.
For example, if you are selling juice, what package are you going to use. Where the fruits are coming from, how far is that from where it is going to be purchased, are the people involved paid fair wages, the fruits and vegetables used for juice are organic or there has been massive amount of pesticides used for growing them? There are many important factors to consider, and we are just at the very beginning of the journey yet. However, we still have time and many of this practices are prevention from disaster. Although not all of them are preventative! There are reports of modern slavery from across the world and itβs even late when it comes to these facts. Non-organic production and deforestations are few more issues which are all linked to irresponsible production and consumption. We might still have some species of bees left but there have been many extinct already.
Unfortunately, it gets horror if we want to list all of those issues here and probably out of the audience boredom although within the scope of topic. We need to act now if we want to avoid these and secure the future.
We can all do a little better even if we donβt want to change overnight.Β Little by little hopefully we can get there to have a fair, safe and happy world.
Since itβs difficult for the consumers to make sure about all these important factors, there are some regulations which are trying to make these secure, transparent and trustworthy. For example Bio label or Fair-trade label. But we need more such labels as well as more accurate monitoring.
So, join us and participate in this eco-conscious event. This is an act of environmentalism against overconsumption and consumerism.
